What actually goes wrong

Slab-on-grade construction is the norm here, which means your supply lines run in or under the concrete. When one fails there is no visible drip — the water goes sideways under the slab and the first sign is the bill, or a warm spot, or a hairline crack in the floor that was not there last year.

Post-tension slabs, common in newer Williamson County builds, make this worse: there are steel cables in that concrete, and cutting one is a structural repair. We locate before anyone even considers opening a floor, and on a post-tension slab we will usually recommend rerouting overhead instead.

Hot-side leaks are more common than cold, because the pipe expands and contracts against the concrete every time somebody showers. If the warm spot moves when you use hot water, that is the tell.

Sometimes it is not the slab. Twice this year we have located a "slab leak" that turned out to be an irrigation line under the porch. You still pay $349, and you do not pay for a floor we did not need to open.

The slab we talked a customer out of breaking
Water bill had quadrupled and two companies had already quoted jackhammering the living room floor. Andre located the leak acoustically in about two hours and then looked at the foundation drawings, which showed post-tension cable. Cutting that slab is a structural repair, not a plumbing one. We rerouted the hot line overhead through the attic instead and the floor was never touched.
