What actually goes wrong

East Nashville and the older parts of Green Hills still drain through cast iron laid in the fifties. Cast iron does not root — it scales, closing from the wall inward until a four-inch pipe is passing water through two inches, and then one holiday weekend it stops.

The newer subdivisions in Mt. Juliet and Smyrna have the opposite problem: PVC laid fast during the build, with bellies where the trench was not compacted. Water stands in the low spot, solids drop out of it, and you get a clog in a ten-year-old line that should have decades left.

Grease, in every neighborhood, every January. What goes down warm sets solid at the first cold section of pipe, which on a Nashville slab house is usually right where the line leaves the foundation.

Roots, if you have mature trees. Middle Tennessee limestone means shallow bedrock and shallow root systems that run sideways looking for water. A hairline joint offset is all they need.

Cast iron that scaled shut under an East Nashville bungalow
A 1940s bungalow that had been rodded three times in two years by two different companies, and nobody had put a camera in it. We did, and the cast iron main had scaled from four inches down to under two. Rodding it opened a channel that closed back up within weeks each time. We jetted it back to bare iron and showed the owner the footage of what the wall of that pipe actually looked like.
